Finding your own slice of paradise without crowds or sky-high prices can be a challenge come summer, but according to the blokes at The Irish Sun, they’ve swapped Guinness pints for cheap pours and Dublin’s sky-high prices for affordable shores in the Canary Islands.
It’s true The Canaries have found themselves on the wrong side of headlines with local protests regarding overtourism, but one such town laden with a gleaming white townscape, sprawling beaches, and posh resorts might just be the ultimate loophole.
While not entirely spotless, what Spanish beach is during Americans’ and Europeans’ most popular vacation season?
What you’ll find are less-crowded shores than, say, the notable names of Spain, and the same goes for affordability, whether it be an ice-cold local cerveza, sensational tapas to snack on, or reasonably priced accommodations overlooking the stunning seaside.
Correlajo: Spain’s Most Underrated Island Getaway
Correlajo is a vibrant resort town tucked away on the Northeast coast of Fuerteventura, not as popular as other islands sitting just ahead of little-known El Hierro (hence the hype for fewer crowds).
Hordes of vacationers across Europe, North Africa, and the U.S. flock to Spain’s wondrous islands, perhaps no more than Tenerife, but Fuertaventura is the place to enjoy more space compared to the rest of Canaries, although some locals would disagree.
Lined with golden-sand shores, vivid turquoise waters, and a picturesque white-washed backdrop, among other natural attractions like Corralejo Natural Park.
Correlajo has no shortage of ways to keep busy. This paradisal hideaway feels more welcoming than the rest of Spain’s islands.
With cheap prices, posh resorts, and gorgeous beaches, Correlajo’s irresistible charm and phenomenal cuisine will spellbind you.
Are You Welcome In The Canaries?
Yes, there have been protests organized in Correlajo, but this is largely an extension of more notable protests in Gran Canaria and the aforementioned Tenerife, rooted by concerns about a tourism model that simply isn’t working with the influx of digital nomads and Spain’s continual record-breaking visitor numbers across the board.
There’s virtually no chance people stop vacationing in Spain, but locals certainly have the right to share their voice on the matter and they’ve done so as recently as last week, though Fuerteventura’s demonstrations are way behind Tenerife and Gran Canaria,
In line with Madrid and Barcelona, the Canaries have been neck and neck with headline-grabbing marches protesting against the unsightly number of visitors changing their beloved home towns.
The good news is that Correlajo is largely off the radar for mainstream travelers, so it feels more inviting.
In other words, you shouldn’t worry about being doused with an unwanted water gun shower like the viral videos out of Barcelona, which wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world as Correlajo’s sun is beaming during summer.
But a better way to cool down on your own terms would be to visit Fueraventura’s only water park, Acua Water Park.
Correlajo’s Best Beaches
Even though Correlajo is off-path for most Americans, Europeans in the know largely flock here not only for relaxing resorts, but to tap into their adventurous side with an array of water sports, such as surfing, kitesurfing, and even boat trips to explore the uninhabited Lobos Island.
But the reason there are premier resorts lining Correlajo’s shores is simply because it’s prime real estate.
Fuertaventura’s Northeast coast is a real-life postcard with soft golden sand and turquoise waters, but which beach should you visit?
According to TripAdvisor, these 3 Correlajo beaches are travelers’ favorites:
- Grandes Playas
- Popcorn Playa (it really looks like popcorn!)
- Flag Beach
Correlajo’s Affordability
Whether you’re going out to eat, hitting up a local bar, booking a tour, or splurging on luxury, none of these factors will break the bank here.
5-star Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa and 4-star Barcelo Correlajo Bay are both going for $199 this summer with all-inclusive options.
In summer, the 3 most popular beachfront resorts can all be booked for under $200 per night (and 2 of them are all-inclusive!).
The AVANTI Lifestyle Hotel is next in price at $191. While not all-inclusive, it is an adults-only hotel.
As backed by the Irish Sun, it’s easy to find local cervezas for $3, cheap tapas (which can also be complimentary depending on the restaurant), and beach bar cocktails for $5.
